This past year's AJRA NFR short go proved to be a very exicting event in Glen Rose, Texas. Not only were championships being determined, but also life-altering instances. Here is an account from this year's NFR All-Around Champion Truck Winner, Allison Danley.
The 2011 AJRA Finals in Glen Rose was one of the best rodeo experiences of my life. I would like to start by thanking Benny Boyd Auto for donating the truck. I would also like to thank the AJRA board of directors for all of their hard work in putting on a fantastic finals rodeo. Most importantly, thanks to God that I am still alive and able to write this. I had a great week competing and watching my friends. I went into the finals with a goal to win the All Around for the week in my age group. Winning the All Around would give me the chance to be one of the eight contestants given keys to the Dodge truck on Sunday. My strategy for the week was to go for third in every event; to make clean runs and catch all my cattle. I ended up making it back to the short round in all my events: barrel racing, pole bending, goat tying, ribbon roping, breakaway roping, and with both partners in the team roping. Everything was going great until Saturday night at the short go. The first event was team roping, and I was up back to back with two different partners. My first run was with Megan Powell. I caught the steer by slick horns, but I was too close and the figure eight caught my horse's front feet. I dropped my rope, but it was too late. TJ, my 1,300 pound heading horse, tripped and rolled completely over the top of me. I felt something hit me in the chest, and saw his hooves inches from my face as he stopped rolling. I jumped up and away so I wouldn't get stepped on as he got up and was amazed to find that everything still worked! After assuring very worried parents, judges, and team roping partners that I was completely fine, I jogged down the arena to get my horse. Thankfully, he wasn't hurt either and we were able to turn right around and make another run with Taylor Wharton, placing third in the round. The saying, "A setback is only the setup for a comeback," seems to apply to the rest of my night, which went well. Long story short, I was one of the excited contestants standing on the stage on Sunday to draw a key that could possibly unlock a Dodge truck and the opportunity to drive it for a year! Words aren't able to describe how excited I was when my key unlocked the door! As I look back on the week at the AJRA Finals, I like to think about the blessings God gave me. He protected me during the wreck, let me spend time with good friends, and on top of all that, I won the truck! I am reminded of my favorite Bible verse, Jeremiah 29:11. "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans for good and not for evil, plans to prosper you, to give you hope and a future."
